This month’s project is a beautiful shawl knit by Dawn (myrrhmary on Ravelry) in Anzula Breeze.

The pattern is Haruni, a free pattern available on Ravelry. Here’s what Dawn has to say about this project.

I used smaller needle than the pattern called for for the lace weight yarn, a #3, and did extra repeats of pattern to compensate. Ended with 16 “stems” on each side. I love it! I did the I-cord bind off, which took forever, and was a good incentive to learn to crochet. * I Actually like the look of the i-cord bind-off better. I really loved this shawl, especially after blocking and planned to keep it and wear it all the time. The project I planned for my mom’s birthday didn’t go so well and I ended up giving it to her instead. Love this yarn, so soft and beautiful. It has a wonderful shine and lovely to touch.

Thank you Dawn! The shawl is lovely and what a great present for your mom. She looks great in it.

Looking for a chance to shop for Anzula yarns in person? Great news! Next week for August’s ArtHop, the Anzula Studio will be having an open house. On Thursday August 5th, from 5pm to 8pm we’ll be on Fulton in front of Iron Bird Lofts. Then on Friday and Saturday (August 6th and 7th) the studio will be open from 10am to 5pm. During our open house you can come by and see the studio, hang out and knit, and have the very rare opportunity to purchase yarn direct from us.

We will have all our yarn bases in stock and available for purchase, along with lots of spinning fiber. If you’ve been reading about our yarns, here on the blog, or on Ravelry, this is a great chance to see and touch all the colors and bases in person. Squishy must be squished to be believed. Hope to see you next week!

Here’s another new repeating feature on the Anzula blog. I’m going to be knitting at least three full sized swatches of each of the yarn lines and posting pictures with gauge information. Today I’m starting out with For Better or Worsted in Maple.

For Better or Worsted (aka FBOW) is a heavy worsted weight blend of 80% Superwash Merino, 10% Cashmere and 10% Nylon. In all my swatches, I knit in the needle size. The purl bumps in the lower right hand corner of the stockinette part of the swatch represent the needle size. This way, I don’t have to write down what size needles I used.

This first swatch is knit on size 7 needles. I got 19 stitches and 30 rows over 4″. This is a pretty dense gauge for this yarn. It’s still soft, but doesn’t have as nice a drape as some of the larger needle sizes. This gauge would work well for mittens or particularly windproof hats

The second swatch is on size 8 needles. I got 18 stitches and 28 rows over 4″. This is what I think the sweet spot for this yarn is. It has a nice drape, but is still opaque. This would be a very nice garment gauge.

The third swatch is on size 9 needles. I got 17 stitches and 26 rows over 4″. This is a nice drapey gauge. It would be perfect for a floppy beret style hat, or if you like your sweaters at a looser gauge.

And finally, this last swatch is just me having some fun with the yarn. There’s a 4 stitch cable, some reverse stockinette, and some seed stitch. I knit this swatch on size 8 needles. The seed stitch in particular looks great in this yarn.

I hope this is helpful for people. Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions on how I could make this feature better. Tune in next time for swatches of our Sport/DK weight yarn, Cricket. Oh, and a shiny gold star if you know the reference in the post title.

Betsy used less than one skein of Cloud for this project. It turned out beautifully. Thank you Betsy for sharing your work with the blog!

(This is the first installment of a new feature on the Anzula blog. Each month we are going to feature a project knit in our yarn by someone different. If you would like to be featured, the best way to get noticed is to have pictures up on ravelry.)

Tonight’s ArtHop features fiber artist Chris “Chrispy” Church, a graduate of Oregon College of Art and Craft. Chris has been knitting for 13 years and designing patterns since 2007. Chris designs with the idea that the garments we wear should cover the body but show off its beauty with elegance. She enjoys various techniques and tries to use them to create unique structure in her designs.

Chris designed these three dresses for her thesis titled Fruits of the Spirits. The dresses are Love, Patience, and Self-Control. You can see some more pictures of the dresses in her Flickr account, but these need to be seen in person!

She also sent samples of 8 knitting patterns available on ravelry. They include two pairs of mittens, three cowls, three hats, a tank top, and a pair of socks. My favorite are the Squiggle Mittens. Also included is a preview of Katherine Hepburn, a hat pattern available next spring.

We hope you can come by to see all of Chris’s beautiful work, and we thank her for sending it to us for ArtHop.

First, let me introduce myself, I’m Jess Awesome (aka jessimuhka on Ravelry) and I’ll be doing some blogging here at the Anzula blog. If you’ve been by the Anzula booth at TNNA or Stitches West, you’ve probably met me. I joined Sabrina on the cross country drive to TNNA the beginning of this month, and here’s how it went.

We left Fresno the afternoon of June 5th and took the I-70 across the country. Along the way we picked up new yarn shops in Colorado, Kansas, and Missouri! You can see all our new shops on the where to buy page. In Kansas City, we met The Sexy Knitter and she took us out for an awesome BBQ dinner.

After Kansas City, we stopped in St. Louis and visited Kirkwood Knittery. Their shop is very cute! Brooke is working with our Breeze yarn, and it looks great.

We also picked up a new shop in St. Charles (near St. Louis) and managed to get some pictures of the owner of Knit & Caboodle picking out colors.

All the shops we stopped in were lovely, but unfortunately we didn’t get pictures of most of them. Once we got to Ohio, it was time to set up for the show. We had small sample skeins of each line so that shop owners could choose from all the available colors. Here’s a picture of the mini-skeins of Sebastian getting ready to go to the show.

The show was tons of fun. We met loads of great people, and had fun mingling at the Ravelry Ice Cream Social. Now we know why people were going on and on about Jeni’s Ice Cream, it’s delicious. I might have had ice cream for dinner a couple of the nights we were there. Set up and tear down went smoothly, thanks to some lovely helpers. Much thanks to Chris, Jenny, and Mary Catherine! On the drive back we took the I-40 route and picked up one more shop in Missouri.

All together, including shops picked up on the way out and back, Anzula yarn and fiber will be available in 18 new shops! The new shops will start receiving their orders at the end of summer. Remember, now that Anzula is wholesale only, any shop that carries our products can make a special order for you. Let your favorite local shop know what you’d like, and they can place the order with us. We’ll get it to your shop as quickly as possible.

As you read this, Team Anzula is zooming along across the U.S. on our way to TNNA. For those of you who don’t know, TNNA is the twice yearly wholesale show where we get the chance to show our yarn to shop owners across the country. The January show in Long Beach was lots of fun and we picked up several of the shops listed on our where to buy page. The summer show is in Columbus, Ohio, and we’re taking a road trip out there!

Once again we will be featuring our semi-solid line of yarns, and will be displaying a wide range of colors and fiber bases. This picture is of our superwash merino lace weight, Wash My Lace in the semi-solid colorway Poppy. If you will be at TNNA, please stop by and say hello, we would love to meet you!

The Anzula studio is getting ready for its third month participating in ArtHop. ArtHop happens on the first Thursday of the month from 5pm until 8pm. This month we will be featuring purses and bags created by talented fiber artists in the Central Valley. Last month we featured some beautiful shawls. In this Facebook video, Sabrina walks you through the exhibit.

We hope you can come by and see us this ArtHop. The Anzula Studio is located on the Sacramento Street side of the Iron Bird Lofts in downtown Fresno, suite 105. Look for the yarn drying on racks outside.

In the future, we are interested in featuring a local fiber artist for a month’s exhibit. If you are interested, please contact us and we can discuss the details. We are also open to ideas for future exhibits.
